Leela - 2023

For my second NYCC appearance, I decided a little less crafting would be good for my sanity. But that didn't mean that I was making the cosplay easy on myself.

I decided to go with Leela from Futurama. It seemed simple enough: boots, black pants, tank top, purple hair, and a messenger bag (bonus: seamless integration for carrying essentials). I just needed to create the iconic cyclops look and make the Wrist LoJack-a-mater. Easy-peasy.

For the Wrist LoJack-a-mater, I created a form replica of my own forearm and sculpted air-dry foam around a phone case so I could slide my own phone inside. It worked amazingly well. A little paint and it was good to go.

They cyclops eye was simple in theory but was a bit of a pain in practice. I took a blank white masquerade mask and wrapped it in cheese cloth and lined with black trim. The pupil and eyelashes were black fabric. It was glued onto my forehead and cheeks with temporary eyelash glue (all I had time to find)...which dissolved pretty quickly the more I sweat. There was also the problem with the bright glare from the overhead lights making vision nearly impossible without wearing a hat. In the end, the mask was (accidentally) temporarily glued to a hat that I had added a Planet Express patch to.

As a fun component, my mom crocheted a Neebler for me to carry around. More people noticed Neebler first than Leela!
